Proper disposal of some types of waste:

Batteries, common and cell phone batteries are also separated, because when discarded in the environment they cause soil contamination. Although they cannot be reused, these materials gain an appropriate destination so as not to generate pollution of the environment.

Medicines should not be disposed of with organic waste, as they contain chemicals that can contaminate soil and water. Some pharmacy chains have drug collection points that are no longer used.

Fluorescent lamps also need special disposal. Inside, a lamp of this type has mercury vapor, a toxic gas, which contaminates the air when broken. Some electrical and building supply stores have collection points for these materials.

Hospital waste also deserves special treatment, as they are usually infected with a large amount of viruses and bacteria. In this way, they are removed from hospitals in a specific way (with safe procedures) and taken to incineration in special places.

  • Blue: papers and cardboard;

  • Green: glass;

  • Red: plastics;

  • Yellow: metals;

  • Brown: organic waste;

  • Black: woods;

  • Gray: non-recycled materials;

  • White: hospital waste;

  • Orange: hazardous waste;

  • Purple: radioactive waste.

In addition to the specific containers for such materials, there are others, for example: for used oil, batteries, corks, etc. Often, the companies that work with these products themselves receive them back after they are used.

Definition - what it is

Selective garbage collection is a process that consists of the separation and collection of waste discarded by companies and people. In this way, materials that can be recycled are separated from organic waste (meat, fruit, vegetables and other food waste). The latter type of waste is disposed of in landfills or used for the manufacture of organic fertilizers.

The recycling

In the selective collection system, recyclable materials are separated into: paper, plastics, metals and glass. There are industries that reuse these materials to manufacture raw materials or even other products.

Importance and benefits

Selective garbage collection is extremely important for society. In addition to generating income for millions of people and savings for companies, it also means a great advantage for the environment as it reduces pollution of soils and rivers. This type of collection is extremely important for the sustainable development of the planet.

Curiosities:

- To facilitate selective collection and recycling, there is a color to represent each recycled material: yellow (metals), green (glasses), blue (papers) and red (plastics). These colors are generally used, together with the recycling symbols, in the containers intended for the collection of materials.

- In Brazil, about 91.1% of households (permanent households) have access to garbage collection (data from Pnad 2019- IBGE). However, only 15% of the Brazilian population has access to the selective garbage collection system.

According to CONAMA Resolution (National Environment Council) No. 275/2001, a color code was established for different types of waste in selective collection. Thus, in the color pattern of the containers, the materials each one receives are:
